Our
Story

Cascadia Big Band, originally known as Cascadia Jazz, began as an offshoot of the Lynnwood Trolley Days band, founded by Becky Janecki, wife of Lynnwood council member George Janecki, and led by local musician and conductor Tim Leese from 2000 to 2002. Following a split between the two groups, Tim invited Lisa Vallins to join as the new lead alto, bringing her talent and energy to the ensemble.

When Tim Leese moved on, Erik Hunter, a dedicated trombonist, took over as leader. Erik’s passion for jazz and commitment to the band were instrumental in its early growth. He established improvisation sessions before rehearsals, fostering a supportive environment for musicians to develop their skills. Under Erik’s guidance, a board was formed consisting of Djin Lim, Lisa Vallins, Keith Reuer, Vince L'Hirondelle, and Laura, rebranding the group as "Cascadia Jazz Band." The band began performing at local gigs, including venues like Town & Country Market (Central Market) in Shoreline and Edmonds Family Nights Out, steadily building its presence in the community.

Vince L'Hirondelle played a valuable role in the band's early days, contributing to its marketing and outreach efforts, and helping to promote the band's presence at local events. His dedication, alongside other key members, helped the band grow during this formative period.

In 2005, Lisa Vallins departed to focus on her new musical venture with The MoodSwings, leaving a lasting impact on the band. The group continued to grow and evolve under Erik's leadership, with his dedication enduring even through his personal health challenges. Erik’s legacy includes not only his leadership but also his contributions to establishing the band's bylaws and non-profit status, providing a strong foundation for the band’s future.

By 2006, Byron Ellis joined the ensemble, and in 2010, he stepped into the leadership role. After performing with the Hal Sherman Alumni Band at Jazz Alley in 2009, Byron rekindled a relationship with Hal Sherman, gaining access to exclusive charts from the Hal Sherman Library. This collaboration allowed the band to transition from big band dance music to the more nuanced post-swing era big band sound. Under Byron’s leadership, Cascadia Jazz was rebranded as the Cascadia Big Band (CBB), introducing a unique repertoire that few other bands can offer.

Cascadia Big Band is dedicated to creating a positive and inclusive environment for musicians of all backgrounds, whether amateur, semi-pro, professional, or retired. The band values musicianship and camaraderie equally, providing a platform where passion for jazz thrives. With a focus on challenging and distinctive charts, CBB continues to evolve, presenting new and exciting material while honoring the legacy of the great bands of the past. The band remains committed to engaging with the community, performing at local venues and events, and keeping the spirit of big band jazz alive.
